Follow Your Dreams and Get Creative

We often get so overwhelmed with our work and family lives that we barely have time for ourselves, let alone a creative project. Yet, when we've pushed our creativity aside for too long, our dreams will likely poke and prod us.

A woman who spends her days working on others' writing as an editor for a newspaper, had the following dream ...

I am in the parking lot of a university. I'm watching my (male) therapist unload cases of musical instruments out of his truck -- guitars, drums, horns, etc. I walk over to him to ask where he and his band will be performing.

There's a platform next to the truck, on which sit two of his friends, both female. One writes in a journal, while the other watches everything and smiles. My therapist teases one who is writing, trying to get her attention. She doesn't want to be disturbed, and so is a bit dismissive with him.

For this woman, the university is a place where one becomes something -- a place to learn, grow and explore. For her to be in the parking lot means that she hasn't gone into the university yet; rather, she's just arrived. She is also seeing something about her own growth for the first time, and she is about to embark upon a "becoming" journey.

Her therapist, in reality, is very creative and into music. Here in her dream, he represents the part of her that knows what needs to happen. He is her dream guide, and he knows the rhythms of her life. His musical instruments represent items that can channel her feelings. He knows it's time to begin!

His two friends are what we call shadow figures -- parts of the dreamer she can now name and own. The smiling friend is comfortable in her own skin and has the self-confidence the dreamer hopes to develop. The woman who is writing, meanwhile, is so engrossed in her craft and self-expression that she doesn't take kindly to interruptions, even though all this takes place in a public parking lot.

The message this dreamer got from her dream? I'm not letting myself follow my creative dream to write.

This woman consciously knows she hasn't been writing, but this dream really brought it to her awareness. After working with this dream, she has committed to writing every day -- in her own way.

Don't pass up the opportunity to create -- especially if your dreams are yelling loudly and clearly, "It's time!!"
