Frizzy hair can be caused by a number of things…humidity, varied curl patterns in the hair, over-processed color or styling abuse…Any way you slice it, it isn't pretty. No one wants their hair to be as out of control asCourtney Love’s. Here are a few tips on how to avoid it, and have your hair as shiny and sleek as Kelly Ripa's.

1. Shampoo and condition.
Make sure you are using the right shampoos and conditioners. My favorite is the Herbal Essences Hydralicious line of shampoos. The shampoo can cure what ails you no matter what your type or texture! Hydration is your elasticity, your shine and your style ability and great hair starts in the shower. This will set you up for a great style and the Hydralicious shampoo and the conditioner are wallet- friendly. If your hair is super frizzy, you might want to try Herbal Essence Hydralicious reconditioning hair shampoo ($3.68,amazon.com) and the Herbal Essence Hydralicious reconditioning hair conditioner ($3.68,amazon.com). If it’s less frizzy, try the other shampoos and conditioners in the line.

2. Apply styling products
Apply product to your hair when it is very wet and fresh from the shower. This step ensures that you do not "over product" and also will aid in the drying. Frizz happens when you are in the drying stage- (subtle tip). Make sure that you have the right product to provide the control your hair needs. For the thickest hair to a medium texture, use a mousse to prep hair. Mousse was designed to help the hair dry more quickly- I likeHerbal Essences Body Envy Mousse ($3.99, drugstore.com).

For finer hair textures try a spray gel, like Herbal Essences Set Me Up Spray Gel ($3.99, walgreens.com). Spray gels should be applied at a distance when the hair is wet - think that you’re casting a net, not doing spot application. After application of your base product, you should then wring your hair out. The water in your hair can help distribute the product through the hair more evenly, and the product will help force excess water from the hair to speed drying time.

3. Dry your hair
If your hair is curly or wavy, avoid disturbing the hair too much in the drying stage, as this creates inconsistency in the hair creating frizz! Wait until hair is almost before you start manipulating the hair. Heat changes the shape of your hair and coolness sets it in. Dry the hair with a diffuser to avoid too much movement. If you want to smooth areas, wait to use a round brush when the hair is almost dry. You might want to use Goody’s Ouchless ceramic round brush ($9.99, drugstore.com)

4. Style and fix spot problems
If all your best attempts fail to produce frizz-free hair, try the curly girl’s best friend: the curling iron! Use an iron that matches the wave or curl pattern you want to achieve and spot fix the frizzy areas. The heat will change the shape of the hair and correct the inconsistency in the curl or wave. You might want to try Conair’s Satin finish tourmaline curling iron ($17.99, ulta.com)

5. Finishing touches
To blend the wave or curl, use a cream over oil. Hair creams are designed to further hydrate the hair and allows the style to maintain its volume and last longer than oils -which sit on top of the hair and can weigh down curl or wave. My favorite cream is the Long-term Relationship Leave-in Split End Protector ($3.99,drugstore.com), as it nourishes the hair to protect from heat styling!
