The famous black gown has just fetched $276,000 — several times the highest estimated going price — at an auction Tuesday in London, Reuters reports. So what did the Chilean fashion museum that bought it get for its hundreds of thousands of dollars? The dress is a strapless silk taffeta number Diana wore in 1981. The low neckline and daring hue sent the press into a frenzy at the time.

Not everybody was gaga for the dress — in fact, Prince Charles himself didn't much care for it — Reuters reports in a video. Auctioneer Kerry Taylor explains that at the time, royals weren't supposed to wear black except in mourning.
Though only 19, Diana was well on her way to becoming an icon and a bit of a fashion rebel. The video shows more of the dress, as well as several other items up for auction, including the late princess' wedding-dress prototype.
