Keep your picnic plans, lose the pounds

Despite your best-laid bikini-body plans, you may feel your stay-in-shape efforts are often thwarted by a succession of summer festivities: graduation parties, holiday-weekend bashes, wedding buffets, routine happy-hour get-togethers. That’s why I love this list of simple get-slim tricks—they allow you to shed pounds without sacrificing your social life!
1. Spice Things Up
It’s a great time to grill some jalapeƱo poppers or put spicy ketchup on your turkey burger. Capsaicin, the substance that puts the hot in hot pepper, temporarily boosts your metabolism. Dairy blocks capsaicin’s sweat-inducing signals better than water does, so pair it with your favorite searing-hot dish.
2. Go Organic
You’ll find burger buns with fiber counts that put conventional choices to shame.
3. Keep the Skin On
Speaking of fiber, a lot of it is in the peel, whether you’re chowing down on potatoes, apples, or pears. So whether you’re grilling homemade steak fries or whipping up a fruit salad, leave some of the skins on.
4. Buy Precut Vegetables
Sure, they cost more, but you’re more likely to eat them. Keep vegetables as nearby as possible so you can snack on them, toss them into salads, or throw them on the barbecue for a quick side dish.
5. Eat Dessert
Yes, always. Even in summer. “A small amount of dessert can signal that the meal is over,” says Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan. She ends her meals with a piece of high-quality chocolate.
